SaGa Creator Interested in Making SaGa Title That Isn’t an RPG

The SaGa series has been rising in popularity over the years through Square Enix’s attempts to remaster and re-release older entries. While the non-linear JRPG franchise could still be considered niche, it’s definitely one that has a loyal group of fans.

In an interview about Final Fantasy XI, SaGa series creator Akitoshi Kawazu touched on the future of the SaGa series saying, “I’d like to come up with something related to the SaGa series that isn’t an RPG but still can be enjoyed by SaGa fans. Permanently moving on to a new genre of games would be letting down fans of the older games, but it’d be nice if we could continue creating games in the traditional style while also expanding our horizons for a broader audience.”

He mentions that he’s interested in VR and action games, which he understands that he’s not known for.

He also shares, “My time as a game developer is limited, so I’d like to spend much less time on each game. With that said, there’s been some projects that were supposed to be quick but just never seem to get done.”

That said, he does add that the SaGa team is expanding. This team might share their project sometime in 2022.

One of the more recent releases, Collection of SaGa Final Fantasy Legend, includes The Final Fantasy Legend, Final Fantasy Legend II, and Final Fantasy Legend III. Each game was created by Akitoshi Kawazu and initially released on Game Boy beginning in 1989. The SaGa series used the Final Fantasy Legend title in hopes of being more popular in the west.

In a live streamSaGa series creator Akitoshi Kawazu stated that there are plans to remaster several other titles in the series including the original Romancing SaGa, SaGa Frontier 2, and Unlimited SaGa. Among them, SaGa Frontier 2 is considered to be the most approachable title, but no release window was provided. Looking back, Unlimited SaGa was not received, so it’ll be interesting if they approach this title with new systems and features to improve it.
