I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level Vol. 6 Manga Review – A Dungeon Adventure

I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years, and Maxed Out My Level is sort of like Seinfeld. It’s small contained stories about nothing at all, but then it pulls from a basket of references and characters to round everything off at random times. I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level Vol. 6 is almost the definition of this as the plot doesn’t move an inch, but somehow we get a dungeon crawling adventure, an encounter with the undead, and a bunny girl.

I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level Vol. 6 opens with a quest to figure out if a zombie is running loose. However, zombies in this world a bit different, and you can’t really tell they are zombies. So after some investigating, Azusa recalls someone mentioning the undead from the previous volume, and they follow the lead. It’s a charming side-story and a fun way to introduce a new character, but that chapter largely ends there.

The real meat of this volume takes place in the world tree after Azusa gets transformed into a gnome. She’ll need to climb the tree with the help of Fatla and Vania. It’s pointed out in the story, but watching these two sisters interact more with each other is fun. We haven’t seen it, and it makes for a unique dynamic as these characters don’t always interact.

The world tree scene is pretty hilarious in an ironic way. It plays on the idea that this once difficult dungeon has now been commercialized and turned into a tourist trap. It’s almost the complete opposite of what you’d expect from a dungeon and really delivers on the comedic timing of some of the jokes. Strangely, the volume ends with a focus on Flatorte as she shares her knowledge of music with the girls and a new bunny girl joins their ranks, temporarily, but she’s there.

This volume is almost filler to highlight some of the supporting cast who haven’t received the spotlight in the last few chapters. However, Morita-san doesn’t seem to care because new characters continue to grow the cast. The illustrations from Yusuke Shiba are commendable, especially in the world tree scenes where the environment seems to change every other panel. Also, I really liked the final chapter that shows movement in the hard rock musical delivery of Flatorte.

I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level Vol. 6 doesn’t do anything for whatever plot this story is going for, but it does deliver on expanding on the supporting cast. There’s also the obligatory bath scene in the volume which reveals a secret about the Demon King, so there’s that. I thought it was a fun adventure volume without any real cliffhangers or overwhelming scenes. The light-hearted nature of the manga is evident throughout these chapters, but I do hope something comes of these new characters.
