Occultic;Nine: New World Officially Canceled

Occultic;Nine is an unfortunate entry of the Science Adventure franchise, being a widely overlooked light novel series that never even concluded, still stuck at only three volumes. Further, its anime and visual novel adaptions were widely panned by general audiences and series fans alike.

Their negative reception can be attributed to several factors, primarily from overly ambitious expectations and poorly implemented character perspective pacing across each of its avenues. Even the light novels, the best iteration of its storytelling, weren’t exactly beloved.

However, the Occultic;Nine visual novel, which has remained Japan-exclusive on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita to this day, is especially infamous for being released in an unfinished state. Waves of demands for fixes to this product occurred since its release, and developer MAGES eventually promised a DLC/re-shipment titled Occultic;Nine: New World that would remedy its incomplete conclusion. Unfortunately, chief MAGES executive Chiyomaru Shikura officially confirmed in a recent livestream of his that plans for this resolved state have been canceled.

Moreover, he stated that if he were to revisit Occultic;Nine, it would be via a potential Occultic;Nine Elite, a remake more akin to Robotics;Note Elite instead of Steins;Gate Elite.

It certainly seems like MAGES has abandoned the Occultic;Nine IP, and it’s probably for the best, considering how many of its releases were simply not commercially viable. It is still a shame, though, since this Science Adventure entry possessed genuine promise. As its name implied, Occultic;Nine followed nine protagonists. They were connected through an online blog called Kirikiri Basara. Further, each character experienced events seemingly defying natural conventions, leading to unexpected results.

I’d argue Occultic;Nine was the most distinct of any Science Adventure entry, at least conceptually. But, alas, it’s time to move on.

Regarding the upcoming Anonymous;Code, it takes place in 2037. The protagonist Pollon Takaoka and his best friend Cross Yumikawa work as hackers for Nakano Symphonies following the “Sad Morning” disaster from 2036. However, during one seemingly ordinary day, Pollon encounters a girl named Momo, who is on the run from the authority for unknown reasons.

After failing in his task to protect her, he utilizes a new app he receives, which allows him to Save and Load in real life, akin to a video game. With his save data viewable via the game’s UI, Pollon ends up interacting with the player moving forward as they both attempt to uncover the mysteries of this program and several other events.

Anonymous;Code is releasing in the West for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam in 2023. View our latest coverage of the game’s Japanese version, which recently launched.

CHAOS HEAD 2

Chaos;Head Noah / Chaos;Child Double Pack is releasing for Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam in the West on October 7, 2022.

Chaos;Head Noah / Chaos;Child Double Pack is a physical release of the collection that includes both games, a Steelbook, and the lingerie DLC. Regarding this, the official website states that the fictitious waifu, Seira Orgel, will not adorn her lingerie costume DLC for the North American and European releases.

Chaos:Head Noah can be seen as the director’s cut version of the original Chaos;Head which was a PC-only release in Japan. Noah added character routes and released for several consoles in Japan. Unfortunately, no edition of Chaos;Head has ever received an official localization.

Chaos;Child is a visual novel taking place 6 years after Chaos;Head Noah, focusing on a new group of protagonists. This title did receive an official English localization from publisher PQube on PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and by publisher Spike Chunsoft on PC via Steam.
