The Maid I Hired Recently is Mysterious Vol. 1 Review – Kinda Sus

I had no idea what The Maid I Hired Recently is Mysterious Vol. 1 would have in store for me. With such a mysterious title, I couldn’t determine what the tone or setting would actually be. It turns out that it’s specifically about a young master and the maid who he hired recently. Even though the story is full of secrets, I’ll share one bit of truth; I enjoy this story.

Every chapter of The Maid I Hired Recently is Mysterious Vol. 1 is like a roller coaster. It typically begins with an announcement from the main protagonist that the maid he hired recently is mysterious, and then we build up to a first drop. An example of a typical interaction is the young master will point out something that the maid is doing that he feels is sus. Then, he begins to feed his assumptions in the bluntest ways, leading to him blurting out how cute the maid is and how she’s probably casting a spell on him.

These interactions continue throughout the entire story. Information is then drip-fed to the reader with character names and how the maid was hired, but don’t expect to learn much. The young master has an active imagination for sure, but I couldn’t help but agree that the maid was differently up to something even when she probably wasn’t.

You see, the maid seems to enjoy teasing the young master’s sudden outbursts. It does seem a little strange in retrospect, considering he’s so young, but she is never allowed to complete the sentence “I’m just kidding” before the young master takes over the conversations. Her reactions are of shock sometimes when she knows she’s taken it too far. I couldn’t stop laughing at some scenes where she would just be wide eyes as the young master was accusing her of something random.

I enjoyed their interactions, which improve over the course of the volume. In fact, I don’t think the first few chapters were as good as the second half. I felt like situations were just repeating too much here, and I had to hear about how good the food is several times. However, the story doesn’t just move on from these plot points. The young master often returns to them in later chapters to catch her slipping, adding a sense of continuity amidst all the chaos.

When it comes to design, I love the stylistic choice of leaving the maid’s eyes purple. Further, back to the roller coaster analogy, the chapters are initially bold and detailed until the young master goes off the rails and they become disorderly. I loved this approach as it made each chapter fun to follow cause you could slowly see the drop approaching.

The Maid I Hired Recently is Mysterious Vol. 1 doesn’t require much from the reader and leaves you with enough information to want to continue. Regardless if this maid is hiding something or not, I felt like I kept reading if only to see the things the young master would blurt out. Sure, the maid shouldn’t be teasing him, but he’s just a ball of energy that makes you smile. There’s some fear that repetition might sink in, but the slow rollout of information keeps the plot headed in some kind of direction, and that’s more than I expected when I first started reading.
