The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Sells Over 18.5 Million Copies Worldwide

Nintendo has recently updated their financial data website, revealing that the latest title in The Legend of Zelda series, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, has sold a total of 18.51 million copies worldwide as of June 30, 2023. Thanks to those sales, Nintendo mentions in their Explanatory Material that the sell-through of first-party software reached the highest level ever for a first quarter.

Furthermore, that number currently puts Tears of the Kingdom as the ninth most sold title in the Nintendo Switch’s lifetime, as seen below:

  • 1st: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 55.46 million copies
  • 2nd: Animal Crossing: New Horizons: 42.79 million copies
  • 3rd: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: 31.77 million copies
  • 4th: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: 30.65 million copies
  • 5th: Super Mario Odyssey: 26.44 million copies
  • 6th: Pokémon Sword/Pokémon Shield: 25.92 million copies
  • 7th: Pokémon Scarlet/Pokémon Violet: 22.66 million copies
  • 8th: Super Mario Party: 19.39 million copies
  • 9th: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: 18.51 million copies
  • 10th: New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe: 16.17 million copies

The Legend of ZeldaTears of the Kingdom occurs after the events of Breath of the Wild, focusing on Link having to find Zelda after the two investigate treacherous ruins beneath Hyrule Castle. However, Link now possesses the right arm of a Zonai called Rauru, enabling access to powerful abilities that let player imagination run wild.
