Star Wars Outlaws Discusses Creating the Galaxy in New Behind-the-Scenes Video

The development team released a behind-the-scenes video about the galaxy of Star Wars Outlaws today, talking about their thought processes in developing the planets and the galaxy they’re contained in. The first topic is why the game will be set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

The main reason is that this time frame is where the Galactic Civil War is at its peak, giving rise to more opportunities for crime. Mob families and thieves like Kay Vess would be easily able to find work from both sides of the Civil War and hide amongst the warring factions more easily.

The rest of the video talks about the designs of the planets and expanding on locations that we already know from the films, and how they went back to the inspiration of the areas to create a feeling of the places rather than one-for-one recreations. The team returned to the original concept art and storyboards for the films to expand well-known locations and delve deeper into the various hives of scum and villainy.

This includes the new planet Toshara which is based on the scoundrel fantasy. This planet looks to be a hub for those on the run, and many clips show Kay speeding across the plains on her speeder. The team hopes to create the ultimate immersive experience for those who have always wanted to live in the Star Wars Universe.

In Star Wars Outlaws, players assume the role of Kay Vess, voiced by Humberly González, along with companions, Nix, played by Dee Bradley Baker (Star Wars: The Bad Batch), as they attempt one of the greatest heists the Outer Rim has ever seen. Seeking the means to start a new life, players will join Kay and Nix as they fight, steal, and outwit their way through the galaxy’s crime syndicates and join the galaxy’s most wanted.

During gameplay, players will take on contracts that lead them across the galaxy throughout several open-world environments. Several criminal syndicates exist within these locals, and players must navigate these relationships to push the narrative.

Star Wars Outlaws will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2024.
